Huawei MateBook D 15 Laptop Review

Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) is the latest mid-range laptop from a Chinese company. Huawei, despite being primarily known (at least in the West) as a smartphone maker, has consistently gained a reputation in the laptop space.

We’ve been very impressed with Huawei devices in the past, including the Huawei MateBook 13, the 2018 Huawei MateBook D, and the flagship Huawei MateBook X Pro, and with this impressive start, we hope the company can continue these successful laptops with MateBook D 15 is new and advanced.

At first glance, the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) certainly looks impressive, with a design that takes clear cues from Apple. The gray color spectrum and keyboard owe all to Apple’s design team, but the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) avoids feeling a cheap sudden shock. Instead, it is ultimately one of the most stylish laptops in the mid-range price bracket.

There are also some nice design tweaks, including full-size USB and HDMI ports, along with USB-C for better connectivity than any recent MacBook out of the box.

The on / off button doubles as a fingerprint scanner for secure entry into Windows 10. When you press the button, your fingerprint is read and saved to boot into Windows 10 – then it uses its fingerprint to log in. Press the button more than once, and it works dramatically.

Another good touch is that the webcam is embedded in a recess on the keyboard and appears when you press the button between the F keys at the top of the keyboard.

Not only does this allow the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) to have very thin bezels around the screen, but it also gives you more privacy and security because you can press the webcam to use it.

Perhaps the best design decision is to add an NFC connection to the body of the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020). This allows you to connect a Hauwei compatible smartphone to your laptop and tap the “Huawei Share” tab. You can then easily and conveniently share files between the two devices and also view the smartphone screen on the laptop.

Design and features

It is clear from the beginning that Huawei wanted to create a mid-range laptop with a design that you would expect to see in expensive laptops. In fact, this is a great idea.

Let people like Dell, Apple and HP fight it by building the most powerful (and most expensive) laptops in the world, while redefining what we expect from an affordable mid-range laptop.

Clearly, the design of the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) owes much to the Apple MacBook. From the gray aluminum design to the size and shape of the keyboard, it was forgiven almost because it’s an Apple device, if not for the Huawei brand and the lack of a Touch Bar.

It’s not quite as beautiful as the MacBook, but it’s certainly one of the best mid-range laptops.

In terms of size, the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) measures 14.08 9 9.05 0. 0.66 inches (357.8 22 229.9 9. 16.9 mm), which is slightly larger than the 2019 15-inch MacBook Pro, which measures 13.75 9. 9.48 0. It is 0.61 inches (34.93 inches). x 24.07 x 1.55 cm).

It weighs 1.62 kg for the model with SSD and hard disk and 1.53 kg for the model with SSD only.

This is actually lighter than the 1.83 kg MacBook Pro, although Apple has crowded more technology (such as the aforementioned Touch Bar as well as a discrete GPU) on the MacBook Pro.

Still, given the price difference between the two, the fact that the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) can even come close to the MacBook Pro style is impressive.

Of course, there are many design differences – and some of them are even in favor of the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020).

For example, the travel keyboard is a little deeper than the MacBooks released before the end of 2019. This results in a more satisfying “click” when typing. Recent MacBooks used Butterfly switches for the keyboard, and they ran into a wide range of problems – which in turn led to Apple replacing the 16-inch MacBook Pro keyboard switches.

The MacBooks also comes with a touch bar: a thin OLED touch screen that runs at the top of the keyboard and displays different buttons depending on the task you are doing and the application you are using. The Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) does not have such a thing – which is understandable in terms of price – but has an on / off button with an internal fingerprint sensor.

Using your fingerprint to log in to Windows 10 is a great feature, and the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) has an added bonus of technology that reads your fingerprint by pressing the power button.

Your fingerprint is securely stored as the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) boot and then used to log in to Windows, so you don’t have to press it a second time. This is a small thing, but it feels good and makes using the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) a much smoother experience.

Another thing we like about the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) compared to the MacBook is the number of ports. While you are stuc

k With two or four Thunderbolt 3 ports on the modern MacBook, the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) comes with three full-size USB ports, along with a USB-C port for newer peripherals and an HDMI port.

The screen is surrounded by very thin edges that keep the overall size of the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) low, while adding to the beauty and modern look of the device.

This means that the webcam is not at the top of the screen. Instead, it is embedded inside the keyboard. Between the F6 and F7 keys is a button with the camera icon.

Pressing it will bring up the webcam. This is a nice solution that gives you more privacy – you can press the camera down again to turn it off. However, the location of the webcam will not be to everyone’s liking, as it will be pointed upwards towards you, which can lead to relatively uneven photos.

Overall, the design of the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) looks great on the look and feel of this mid-range laptop.

Its design borrows from the MacBook, but it can almost avoid being cheap. Huawei adds a few innovative features to it, and we want to see more of this in the future with more confidence in our design company.

Price and availability

The Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) is currently available with the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U quad-core processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of internal storage priced at 99 599.99 (about $ 780, A $ 1,200).

This price puts the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) perfectly in the mid-range camp. These are laptops that perform better than low-cost laptops but do not take advantage of the most powerful components (or very high prices) found in high-end laptops.

As you can imagine, this is a busy market that can hardly be distinguished – that’s why Huawei is versatile with the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) design.

There’s also a 14-inch Huawei MateBook D 14 (2020) for people with a more portable laptop, and interestingly, this smaller laptop is more expensive than the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) – with a price tag of 649.99 Pound (about $ 800, A $ 1,300)

It comes with the same specifications as the 15-inch model, but with a smaller screen and a larger 512GB SSD.

This puts potential buyers of the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) in a bit of a quandary. If you want the cheapest model, you should go for the 15-inch model with a 256 GB hard drive.

However, if you want more storage (and this is not out of the question, because 256 GB is very small these days), then you have to pay more and work with a smaller screen.

Meanwhile, when it comes to availability, things get a little complicated. The Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) (along with the MateBook D 14) is readily available in the UK from a wide range of retailers including Amazon, Argos and Very.

However, it does not appear to be available in the United States or Australia at the time of writing. We are pursuing Huawei to get a better idea of global access.

However, given the US government’s complex relationship with Huawei products, it is possible that the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) will never be available there.

Huawei is available with a list of new MateBook D regions: Europe, Asia Pacific, Russia, Latin America, Japan, and the Middle East. If you do not live in those places, you will find a tricky takeover.

Performance

The Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) comes in a single configuration with the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U quad-core processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB. For anyone who knows the specifications of the laptop, you can immediately say that this laptop does not reach any record in performance.

While 8GB of RAM is what we want at least for Windows 10 laptops, the 256GB SSD is a bit to the right – you may run out of disk space, especially if you have large collections Have large files, such as movies and music.

You can also forget about games – there is not enough space to install most modern titles, and the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) hardware does not run well anyway.

Huawei has done a little differently with the MateBook D, equipping it with an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor instead of an Intel chip.

If you are looking to buy a Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020), you probably are not too worried about having a high-tech laptop, but the idea that this laptop will be replaced soon may stop you.

However, in everyday use, the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) performs well. Keep your expectations up to date as long as you know and do not try to do too much intensive work – such as 3D rendering or playing the latest games – so you should be happy with the performance of this laptop for its price.

The AMD Ryzen 5 3500U comes with integrated AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics, and while they can handle basic 2D gaming, the tax will not run well.

The screen is a bit disappointing and with a contrast ratio of only 800: 1 and a relatively low brightness of 250 nits, the screen is a bit bloody and washed out. It’s a long way from some of the bright, vibrant screens we’re used to at this price point – and nowhere is the quality of the MacBook screen.

The Huawei Share feature is more successful. This is an NFC badge that lets you tap on an Huawei compatible phone and seamlessly move files between it and the Huawei MateBook D 15, as well as view the phone screen on a laptop.

This works very well and for anyone with a Huawei phone (Honor special phones also work), this is a very powerful selling point. However, while it is understandable to limit this feature to Huawei phones, it is also frustrating if you have a different brand of smartphone because you are not able to use this feature.

Throughout our time with the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020), laptops have remained remarkably quiet even in heavy work.

According to Huawei, this is thanks to the new SharkFin 2.0 cooling technology.

If it includes fans that have about 50% more blades, it means that they can absorb cool air and expel hot air much more efficiently from the body.

Input devices

Keyboard

The MateBook D 15’s keys are relatively short, but the trigger point is clear. Even long typing sessions should not be a problem. However, we must mention the fact.

Touch screen

The MateBook D 15 uses the TouchPad as a mouse replacement. When moving the mouse pointer, users should not have any problems, and moving and dropping is easy due to the smooth surface of the TouchPad. Right, and left clicks are recorded with great confidence.

Processor

The AMD Ryzen 5 3500U is a quad-core, eight-thread processor that offers higher clock speeds at the same TDP than its predecessor, the Ryzen 5 2500U.

The base frequency is 2.1 GHz and the amplification frequency is 3.7 GHz. How long the processor can run at full speed depends a lot on the cooling solution.

Storage devices

The MateBook D 15 comes with a fast PM981 SSD from Samsung. This works very well in our benchmark, but on other devices like the Lenovo ThinkBook 15 it can read and write up to 30% faster.

Graphic card

Hatewe’s MateBook D 15 comes bundled with the Radeon RX Vega 8 graphics processor. Its performance depends a lot on the RAM configuration.

Here, devices with dual-channel RAM have many advantages. In 3DMark benchmarks, the RX Vega 8 performs very well on the Huawei notebook. Here, these integrated GPUs are a problem. Graphic performance does not change when working with the battery.

Speakers

The MateBook D 15 speakers are not loud. The upper bouts featured two cutaways, for easier access to the higher frets.

In general, speakers are good enough to consume media content in quiet environments. However, for a better listening experience, we recommend using external headphones or speakers.

Battery life

Given the large number of laptops and smartphones that perform unpleasant battery life all day long (and Huawei smartphones are a strong competitor in this area), the short-lived durability of the MateBook D 15 blows me a little out of the wind. After charging overnight, most of what I got from the Huawei MateBook D 15 was about 4.5 hours, and about 5% of the battery was left in the tank.

It was with a little regular use (word processing and some Photoshop) and about an hour of play, where it actually started to fall apart.

USB-C fast charging does an amazing job that does not drain you in any way. Huawei claims it can take you to 53% in 30 minutes.

Verdict

Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) has attractive positives including a solid metal chassis and an IPS screen with minimal margins with a bright blue light filter.

Users of Huawei and Honor compatible smartphones may appreciate the screen sharing and file transfer capabilities. Fast charging is also welcome.

However, battery life can be better, more flexibility in storage capacity will be good, speaker noise distortion is relatively high, and the view from the pop-up camera on the keyboard is not optimal.

Overall, considering the price, this laptop is an interesting offer. The ability to share the page may just be enough to impress compatible phone owners..
