Asus VH236H 23″ LCD monitor

The glossy black of the Asus VH236H has good picture quality and smooth film, making it a good, affordable monitor for entertainment-oriented shoppers.

This monitor hosts a host of rear ports including HDMI, DVI, VGA and audio input plus an S / PDIF jack. All are clearly labeled and easily accessible, so connecting cables is a breeze.

The VH236H has a built-in speaker that is suitable for basic office work but not for music or movies. Another notable drawback is the lack of any USB port.

The five buttons on the front of the monitor manage the on-screen display, which is relatively easy to navigate. OSD includes an array of lighting modes such as landscape, standard, theater and night view.

A separate brightness control enables you to make more minute adjustments. The screen tilts but cannot rotate.

The VH236H has a high quality 1920×1080 native 1080p resolution. Its admirable performance in our motion tests is suitable for movies and other forms of entertainment.

Its reasonable price makes it a more attractive option in the current new monitor market.

Design and Features

The 23-inch Asus VH236H has a sleek design with a sleek black bezel and matte black on the back.

The depth of the panel is only 1.25 inches. However, when you add the ventilation system, the full-screen depth is 2.5 inches.

This is much thicker than the 23-inch Samsung SyncMaster P2370, which is more than an inch deep.

The edges are 0.75 inches on the left and right and 1.25 inches on the bottom, where there is a silver Asus logo.

The bottom edge is about 2.5 inches from the desktop, but unfortunately, the screen height is not adjustable and there is no option to rotate the screen or rotate the screen vertically.

The only ergonomic feature is the ability to tilt the screen back 25 degrees.

The diameter of the circular base is 4.25 inches. The display shakes considerably when knocked from the side, though not as small as the P2370.

Connectivity options include DVI, HDMI, and VGA – all three ports on the right side of the display neck are easily accessible. The built-in speakers are located at the top of the back of the screen.

The orange on/off button is located in the lower right corner of the border, and to the left is the five-button OSD array. The array includes menu, volume / down, brightness / up, S / A, and source.

The S / A button switches to five standards presets theater, game, night view, and landscape.

Pressing the menu activates the on-screen display (OSD), which includes additional controls for Contrast and Overdrive.

By sending a voltage explosion to the liquid crystals that increase the crystal transfer rate, Overdrive can effectively reduce the ghost effects significantly. In our tests, Overdrive consumption is from 0 to 100

There are also controls for color temperature and the ability to manually adjust red, green, and blue values.

Browsing the menu is sometimes frustrating because some controls have unstable performance. When you press the menu button, you need to press the S / A button to exit the list.

Similarly, pressing S / A will display a preset menu that requires you to press the menu to exit. More compatible controls will be less confusing and frustrating. Calibration in the dark is also a challenge because there are no buttons for lighting.

Asus VH236H 16: 9 aspect ratio supports the “Full HD” resolution of 1,920×1,080. This trend continues for most monitor vendors to move to 16: 9 from 16:10 because high-quality content – especially 1080p movies – can be placed on a 1,920×1,080 pixels screen without image distortion.

The display scored a combined 92 in performance tests based on CNET Labs DisplayMate, just behind the 93 Samsung SyncMaster P2370.

Asus did well in color tests but had some problems with color tests that had the capacity of an LCD to provide a smooth and consistent sorting of primary color grading. Likewise, Asus could not consistently provide colors during testing.

The VH236H achieved a brightness score of 283 candelas per square meter (cd / m2) – just a few points away from the maximum 300 cd/meter claimed by Asus. The Samsung SyncMaster P2370 got lower brightness at 239 cd / m2, but just below the maximum 250 cd / m3.

In the dark screen test, both screens at the top and bottom edges of the screens have significant backlighting, but the Asus performance is slightly better.
