After Dell Poweredge 1950 we have Dell Poweredge 2950 which is a significant improvement in storage.
The 2U chassis offers a lot more space than its low-profile partner, and Dell has made good use of this extra real estate.

The front panel offers a good range of storage options. The unit consisted of a four-disc cage, three of which were occupied by Sag 3.5 Seagate drives. Because they have the same interface, you can replace these SATA drives with lower cost and higher capacity.
A six-drive cage is also available for 3.5-inch drives, or you can upgrade to eight-pin drives and 2.5 SAS drives.

The only weird thing about this pair is the SATA interfaces built into the motherboard – the 1950s also have an interface and seem to have no useful purpose.

Storage fault tolerance is comprehensive, with the optional PERC 5 / i RAID controller (cost included at the price we quote here) offers a good range of RAID features.

Cabling is just as orderly as it was in the 1950s. The RAID controller is in the same place and is wired directly to the rear panel with a short cable.
However, the DVD drive is on the opposite side of the chassis with the motherboard IDE interface, so its cable extends the width of the chassis.
Power failure tolerance is now a standard requirement on rack servers, and 2950 comes with two large 750-watt hot-swappable sources.

Development options are also good, as the horizontal riser card next to the power supply slot offers a pair of PCI Express 8x slots. The second and smaller riser card on the opposite side provides a PCI Express 4x slot, and you can combine and match them with PCI-X versions. As in 1950, both riser cards can be released and replaced in seconds.

For a rack server, 2950 runs relatively quietly, and for good reason, because the processors are equipped with large inactive heatsinks.

In front of the bank, there are four fan modules with a diameter of 60 mm and each of them can be replaced.
The eight memory sockets are in exactly the same location as the 1950s, and these, along with the processor, are housed in a large solid shroud that can be released and turned back for easy access.
