Asus VivoBook Pro N580VD Review

The Asus VivoBook Pro N580VD is a 15.6-inch notebook for budget creators. Anyone who wants the power of the Dell MacBook Pro and Apple XPS can not afford it, so Asus comes in with this $ 1,259 replacement.

Design

The VivoBook Pro has a metal brush cover and is made of a metal that Asus claims are scratch-resistant. And although the company says the VivoBook Pro will be available in “Ice Gold”, it looks a lot like silver to us. This design gives the laptop an authentic look, but the color is so dull that the grain is lost in the reflection of bright light.

Weighing in at 5.1 inches and 0.8 inches thick, the VivoBook Pro is heavier than the 15-inch Lenovo Yoga 720 (4.6 pounds, 0.8 inches), the Dell XPS 15 (4.6 pounds, 0.7 inches), and the 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro (4 pounds, 0.6 inches). )

VivoBook Pro tries to compensate for its weight with a variety of powerful ports. To the left is an Ethernet jack, a USB 3.0 port, HDMI output, and a USB 3.1 Type-C port, and two USB 2.0 ports, a headphone jack, and an SD memory card reader.

Display

The 15.6-inch display on the VivoBook Pro offers good color output, though I wish the screen was a little brighter. While watching Rick and Morty on the VivoBook Pro, I noticed the exact colors of a green, icy blue alien Rick. Szechuan McNuggets Red Shirt.

The VivoBook Pro produces 115% of the sRGB range, which is higher than the 103% average of regular notebooks, similar to 114% of the Yoga 720 and 126% of the MacBook Pro. The XPS 15 is much more colorful and has a score of 188%.

The VivoBook Pro’s relatively bright screen emits up to 277 nits, which is lighter than the average of 260 nits and is similar to the Yoga 720 (272 nits) and XPS 15 (282 nits).

Keyboard and touch screen

If you want to type a lot, the VivoBook keyboard should do well.

Asus knows how to assemble a proper board, and this stylish endeavor has responsive keys and a smooth typing operation. Thanks to the right size keys, touch typing was not difficult either.

For night work, you also have a full backlight. This can be done through different ratings, depending on your environment.

There’s plenty of room for a numeric keypad on the right – although unfortunately, Asus puts it in front of the rest of the keyboard. There is no gap at all, which means that one of the keys can be easily mistaken when touched. Also, in all that turmoil, the arrow keys are shattered, which you have to constantly look for to find.

Screen

Although the VivoBook Pro 15 has a 15.6-inch Full HD panel, these images are unfortunately poor. Sure, the images are sharp enough, but the screen is disappointing in almost every other context.

For the first time, color reproduction is tragically inadequate. Only 58% of the sRGB range can be accurately reproduced, down to 43% in Adobe RGB. In other words, every creative professional has to look elsewhere for their next machine. If you want realistic images, check out the LG gram or Apple MacBook.

As usual, you can use the Asus Splendid tool to enable low light mode, which produces warmer images for easier viewing at night. You can also change the Vivid mode, although this only seems to greatly increase the brightness level. The visuals are still quite dull and soulless.

The viewing angle is also very disappointing. Start tilting the screen from your face and the images become blurry, while the colors change instantly.

Performance

There is no doubt that the outstanding feature of this Asus device is its performance. The Intel Core i7-7700HQ chipset is packed in an aluminum frame, a Kaby Lake processor that offers a lot of power for everything.

It’s also nice to see the proprietary graphics in Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1050 VivoBook Pro 15. This is a step above the Nvidia 940MX GPU found in Lenovo’s IdeaPad 720, which is still one of our favorite laptops at this price point.

While this may not quite match the most exclusive gaming laptops, the VivoBook is still quite capable of playing hard, high-detail games. All at a smooth frame rate, so you have the best possible chance at fast action titles. This is a definite step from the graphics capabilities of most other laptops at this price point.

The dual-fan system helps keep the N580VD cool throughout the body, and it seems to work effectively. The back of the laptop gets a little warm during heavy gaming sessions, though certainly not a concern at all. Of course, the fans’ spinning sound is a bit noisy when it reaches its maximum – but, again, it doesn’t compare to some of the most powerful gaming laptops available.

Asus has a lot of storage space that is suitable for anyone who downloads a lot of programs or works with large files. Unfortunately, most of this – 1TB, to be exact – comes in the form of a SATA hard drive. Plus, you’ll get a 128GB SSD for any app that needs speed.

Audio

The VivoBook Pro produces a good sound that is loud enough to fill a large conference room.

The Audio Wizard Pro audio preset tool includes music, movie, game, and audio settings, as well as the option to disable all settings. Adjust the music, because turning it off takes all the power out of the speakers.

Battery life

Unfortunately, battery life is another weakness, mainly due to the presence of power suction components. However, even if you use the VivoBook Pro 15 for very light tasks such as browsing the web and playing music, you will only have about four hours of playback time on each charge.

Pros

  • Relatively affordable
  • Fast overall performance
  • Color display

Cons

  • Relatively heavy
  • Poor battery life
  • Slow SSD
  • Many anti-flatulence tools
